"I’ve been obsessed with maps for as long as I can think. Drawing is a magic tool to capture the world, and —in the process of abstraction— putting a bit of sense of it.
In that regard a map is the ultimate drawing. City grids push this idea one step further: somebody started with an abstract drawing, and instead of the drawing following reality, reality is created based on the drawing.
I grew up in the baroque city of Ludwigsburg, where most streets run pretty much straight from East to West and North to South. My beloved New York is defined by it’s rigid grid, with renegade Broadway elegantly not giving a damn (but who the hell approved the West village?)."
