Welcome to our guide on art by Christoph Niemann. Let us introduce you to Christophs print editions and the various techniques he uses to create his prints as well as his unique drawings. Whether you’re new to collecting or looking to expand your art knowledge, this page will help you understand the unique characteristics of each artwork, how editions work, and what makes each piece special.
In the world of printmaking, an art edition refers to a limited series of prints created using the same technique and produced at the same time. Every print in an edition is an original piece of artwork. For example, if you see a print marked “7/100”, it means this particular print is the 7th out of an edition of 100.
All of our prints are signed, dated and numbered by Christoph Niemann and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). This document guarantees the print’s authenticity and provides details about the artwork, ensuring you are purchasing a genuine piece.
The beauty of art editions is that they allow more people to own a piece of original art at a more accessible price. Over time, as editions sell out, their prices increase, making early purchases an investment in your collection.
Silkscreen printing is an artisanal process that creates a brilliant color experience. The process involves creating a stencil for each color of the design, and is then pressing ink through a mesh fabric onto paper. Each color is printed one at a time, creating a vibrant, tactile layering effect - even creating new colors where the stencils overlap. All silkscreen editions are handmade in Berlin. Christoph personally makes the color separations, selects the pigments and supervises each print.
Letterpress is the oldest printing technique there is, and it adds “depth” to the artwork in every sense of the word. During the printing process the raised surfaces of the printing plate are colored in ink and pressed against the paper by the historic Heidelberg press, they leave a subtle, tactile impression. The result is a print that feels as good as it looks, by running your fingers over the artwork you will feel a unique relief effect.
Remember back in school during art class, when you worked on that linoleum and experienced the frustration when the cut veered off course or lacked the depth you intended? The same challenges occurred for Christoph when he carved his linocuts.
During the printing process the carved areas are left uninked, and the raised areas are then pressed onto paper. Due to the softness of the material, which can’t withstand the pressure of a mechanical printing press for too long - linocuts have a smaller edition size, making them even more exclusive. The results are striking, bold lines and a strong graphic quality.
The Sunday Sketches are Christoph’s ongoing project where he challenges his creativity by choosing an everyday object and utilizing scale and composition to turn the known into something unexpected. The series is printed as an offset edition and are marked with an embossed seal designed by Christoph.
Each drawing is a unique piece of art, created and signed by Christoph. His preferred medium is ink on paper, in which the colors depending on the purity and concentration create different degrees of dilution. In his travel drawings he embraces bold perspectives and negative space, revealing the beauty of our surroundings through abstraction and reduction.
